The following comments are designed to make the text more accesible to the modern scholarly reader of Spanish. They include historical, biographic, and ethnographic notes, as well as linguistic and textual commentary. Given the constraints of space, the notes are naturally brief and are intended to provide an identification of the item and relevant bibliography. Linguistic commentary includes concise explanations of phonological, morphosyntactic, and lexical features found in the main body of the text. The undated marginal notes are not commented upon, save for a few examples. Lexical items that are noted are principally words that may not be familiar to the reader, forms that are antiquated or have fallen out of use, and lexemes that are used more frequently in legal or military registers. (21) Textual features such as the use of certain abbreviations, orthographic representations, possible errors on the part of the scribe, and spatial relationships between items are commented on.
